17-04-2025 / Site Update: Organizing files + Guitar Tabs!
Sheesh. What's it been, Five months?
Introduction
If there's one thing you should know about me, I am somehow simultaneously an incredibly busy and an incredibly lazy person.
I am quite busy with my own work, studies and such. It's not that I don't get free time, Just that I spend a lot of it playing video games, making sketches, reading books, trying my hand at music production and stuff.
Updating my website... Ah, right. That's one of the many things I've just been too lazy to do.
I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that I really need to organize my life, so that I do "a little bit of everything". I don't wanna become an absolute slob that does nothing but play Team Fortress 2 all day just because there's "nothing to do". At the same time , I don't really want to lock myself into a very strict routine. I've tried that before, it starts to get on my nerves in about a week.
SO, I'm in a bit of an awkward situation where I'm not quite sure what to do. I guess I'll try to just straight-up organize myself, small steps at a time. Starting with fixing up my website a bit.
Subdirectories
This was something I'd been meaning to do for quite some time. Instead of leaving all your files in the main directory and then getting overwhelmed by 30-40 random files just sitting out there in the open, just segregate them into a few categories and chuck them all into subfolders. A simple 10-15 minute job that I postponed for FIVE MONTHS.
Now what I hadn't foreseen was the fact that putting HTML files in subfolders breaks all the local/on-site links. Again, not a major issue, just had to replace all the linked files in every HTML page with the proper paths.
Eg. a link pointing to /style.css would have to be renamed to ../style.css to work.
(i.e. Pointing to style.css in the parent directory, not in the subdirectory/current directory.)
I am pretty sure there's a much easier way to deal with this, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I have an idea that involves symlinking style.css into the /articles and /misc subfolder but I have a feeling that's either going to be too messy, or symbolic links will probably break when I upload this to Neocities. That's something I want to try later.
For the time being though, I've just updated my existing articles/misc pages AND my template page, the links now point to the files in the parent directory. Thus, the subfolder system SHOULD work. I have no idea if this is going to be easy or painful to work with. I suppose we'll soon find out. My website directory DOES look considerably cleaner than it did before, so that's nice.
Now for the fun part, that you were probably more interested in when you read the title of this article...
Guitar Tabs
I like music and I own a guitar.
One of the things I started doing out of boredom is to try and guess the guitar tabs and chords of a song. You listen to it a bunch of times, maybe watch a video of a studio session or a live concert to see how it's played, and you can figure it out to varying degrees of accuracy.
At some point, I figured why not share my tabs with other people who want to play these songs? Especially when they're songs by not-so-well-known artists whose I can't find tabs elsewhere, OR the existing tabs are wrong.
I tried posting to UltimateGuitar. It's a great service for viewing and uploading chords/tabs. My only complaint was that they're a LITTLE too strict about formatting and stuff and I find that a bit annoying. Also, the web interface is a little too... "heavy" and cluttered for my taste.
So I decided to just post the ones that I've transcribed myself, on my own website. They are accessible through the tabs/ section. At the time of writing, four tabs are available for viewing, in txt and html formats. They're listed along with a YouTube link so that you can quickly listen to the actual songs for reference.
I've worked pretty hard on these, do please provide feedback/corrections through contact/ if any.
What's next?
Well, that's more or less it for the time being.
I kind of wanted to write something more eloquent here but I can't really think of anything. I've got to work on myself, get my life back on track. I'll TRY to update the site a bit more often.
I wish you all the best, Hope you have a nice day!
